The Sculpture Contests

The Urunday Foundation and the Government of Chaco have been organizing Outdoors Contests of Sculptures since 1988. The Contests always take place in the Central Square of the city of Resistencia, during the month of July.

From national contests they happened to turn into international contests. These contests summon the most prestigious artists of the country and of the world and count with the massive concurrence of the local community and tourists who arrive from different points of the planet.

The square becomes a cultural and social event since artists and town people are together in the same space sharing a moment of life through the creation. About 8,000 people meet there everyday and more than 25,000 assist at the closing act where prizes are delivered.

At the beggining , the material used was urunday (hard wood of a tree of the zone). From 1996 onwards the participants worked in travertino marble and metal, open air resistant materials that allow the produced works to be incorporated to the patrimony of Resistencia, the City of the Sculptures.

The importance achieved by these contests has inserted Resistencia in the International Circuits of Sculpture and since 1998 the contests have the support of UNESCO, becoming one of the most important scenes of the world in this artistic discipline.
